In the context of the book the answer might be: If literature were supposed to be interactive Dickens would have done it, or Homer. Likewise, Shakespeare, the great narrative innovator, never tried a choose-your-own adventure. Interactivity might be useful in cook books, but in literature there is little pre-computer precedent.
